Meditation can be described as a state of relaxation, contemplation and being in the present moment, or a state of reflection.
Meditation is a mental practice that is designed to develop greater awareness and understanding of yourself and your external environment.
Meditation can help create mindfulness. Mindfulness is about learning to develop awareness of being present in the moment, being fully engaged in what is happening right now and not being affected by internal or external distractions.
Meditation gives the individual time to contemplate and reflect, which allows the mind to process thoughts and emotions.
By allowing the mind time to process the thoughts and emotions may help to create more calm and peace within yourself.
Meditating regularly has proven to increase serotonin within the body, which can provide benefits such as:
- Feel relaxed, happy, and confident
- Appetite control
- Mood and behaviour regulator
- Improve sleep
- Improve memory and learning
Serotonin is a neurotransmitter released by neurons in the brain. It is formed by the amino acid called tryptophan. Tryptophan in the blood sends the message to the brain to produce serotonin. This can help the individual’s overall mood and can help with anxiety and depression.
